Olympian learns he can't skate to ‘Minions' music days before competition
Feb 02, 2026
There’s already heartbreak on the ice and the start of the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympic Games is still days away.
Spanish figure skater Tomàs-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté announced Monday that he would not be able to use his short program music due to “copyright clearance issues.”
“Hi eve
ryone… this season I competed with my Minions short program to bring joy and a playful style to the ice while still meeting every required element to show that skating as a male Olympic figure skater can be fun,” the Olympian wrote on Instagram.
For his short program, Guarino Sabaté wore a blue overalls and a yellow shirt, a nob to the iconic Minions uniform. He performed to music from the “Despicable Me” movies a couple of weeks ago, on his path toward the 2026 Games.

According to the Spanish Olympian, he submitted his program music for clearance last August and skated all season long to the music — only to learn he couldn’t perform it at the Olympics with only a few days to come up with a new plan.
“Finding this out last Friday, so close to the biggest competition of my life, was incredible disappointing,” his Instagram note continued. “Nevertheless, I will face this challenge head-on and do everything I can to make the best of the situation.”
The men’s short program is scheduled for Feb. 10, giving the Spaniard barely a week to come up with a plan to replace routine.
Guarino Sabaté is not the only skater this year plagued my clearance issues for music. Reigning world champion Alysa Liu recently revealed she’s unlikely to perform to Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary,” which Liu used at the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and locked in her ticket to Milan Cortina.
