A Miramar home went up in flames overnight after the homeowner turned on the heater during this weekend’s cold snap.
The fire broke out along the 2900 block of Buttonwood Avenue, early Monday morning.
Miramar Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of the blaze at around 3:30 a.m. Crews wer
e able to quickly knock down the flames.
7News cameras captures a hole in the roof of the home.
Homeowner Hansy Aguste told 7News he rarely uses his central heat, but his wife told him she was cold.
“After that, I see smoke,” said Aguste.
He said he turned it off, but it didn’t help and then he heard a boom.
“After the boom, she said, ‘What is it?’ I said, ‘I don’t know,’ and then I went outside, I looked, and I see the roof is on fire, and I tried to kill it myself with a hose, my water hose,” said Aguste.
Aguste said that this was only the second time he believes he’s used the home’s heater in the last 25 years.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Aguste, his wife and his dog were able to get out OK and will stay elsewhere for the time being. He said his family’s safety is all that matters.
The fire marshal is investigating the cause.
