SEPTA rolls out leased rail cars to ease Regional Rail overcrowding
Feb 02, 2026
SEPTA is adding 10 leased rail cars from the Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC) system to help ease overcrowding on Regional Rail lines on Monday.
The move, announced last year, is intended to help SEPTA deal with some issues that have arisen following months of inspections and revitalizations of
the mass transit provider’s fleet of Silverliner IV trains that have undergone months of mandated inspections and maintenance.
Starting Monday, these leased trains, which were procured at a cost of about $2.6 million, will begin to see use along SEPTA’s West Trenton and Trenton Regional Rail lines.
In a statement on the move, SEPTA officials said the leased rail cars will allow SEPTA to “ease crowding conditions that persist on some trains as SEPTA works to complete federally-mandated repairs to the 50-year-old Silverliner IV fleet.”
Along with the inclusion of these rail cars to its system, SEPTA has unveiled new Regional Rail schedules that went into effect on Sunday.
Officials have said the newly updated schedules are intended to help “enhance service on several key lines, including additional trips on the Wilmington, Trenton, and Chestnut Hill East lines, and increased service frequency from Wayne Junction directly to the Philadelphia International Airport.”
