A woman was hospitalized Saturday after being shot while trying to reach for an officer’s gun, according to Colorado Springs police.
At about 10 p.m., officers responded to a call about a man chasing a woman in the 1200 block of Delaware Drive on the city’s east side. The
caller told dispatch that one of the parties was carrying a rifle, police said.
When the officers arrived, they found a woman who fit the description of the one mentioned in the call for service. The woman, who was carrying a knife, began running when she saw officers.
As the officers pursued her on foot, the woman threw the knife away and got in the front seat of a CSPD patrol vehicle, police said. Ignoring officers’ commands to exit the vehicle, the woman reportedly reached for the duty shotgun inside the cruiser.
“At that time, one officer fired at least one shot, striking the female,” officials wrote in an online blotter entry.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition, police said. She is expected to survive her injuries.
In according with state law, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will head the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. CSPD will release a “significant event” briefing video within 21 days, according to the blotter entry.
