CVC Girls Wrestling Tournament: Trenton High 3peats as team champion; Lawrence’s Melina Velazco Most Outstanding Wrestler
Jan 31, 2026
ROBBINSVILLE — Bolstered by a booming youth feeder program and a gung-ho coaching staff, the Trenton High girls wrestling team is developing into a dynasty that’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
The latest example of Trenton’s dominance occurred on Saturday when it rolled to the
team title in the CVC Wrestling Championships at Robbinsville with 200.5 points and three individual winners.
It was the third year in which the tournament has included just a girls competition and it was the third time Trenton has impressively emerged as the champion.
Hamilton came in second with 163 points and Steinert was third with 135.5.

The Tornadoes had it locked up before the finals even got started and they wasted no time blowing it wide open as Heaven Sykes captured the 114-pound title by pinning Princeton’s top-seeded Lara Bahr in a quick 1:08 with a headlock after fighting off a cradle.
What followed was even faster as Princessstorm Woody (20-1) captured her third CVC Championships title when she needed only 16 seconds to record a fall in the 120-pound final.
One weight later, Noelsymar Estrada (20-5) made it three Trenton champs with a third-period pin at 132 pounds.
“We knew what we had to do as a team,” said Woody, who is ranked fourth in the state at 114 pounds, but has yet to decide what weight she will enter in districts after finishing second in the state last year. “Our youth program is really good and we had a great group of freshmen. Our team really improved (as the year progressed) and we came here wanting to make it three in a row.”
Those were pretty much the same words echoed by Estrada.
“Our minds were focused on a three-peat,” said Estrada. “We love coach (Rob) Prunetti. He tells us not to underestimate anybody, but they (the other teams) are not us. People were doubting us, but wrestling for Trenton is a lifestyle. I just went out there thinking do it for the team.”

The girls “Outstanding’ Wrestler” was Lawrence’s 126-pounder Marina Velazco, who lit up the gym by pinning Hamilton’s Salma Aldelnabi in 3:11.
Earlier, Lawrence’s Stella Kramer (20-3) got the finals started by decking top-seeded Emma Merritt of Princeton in 3:58 at 100 pounds. Along with Tanvi Madisetti’s first-place showing at 185, it meant Lawrence equaled Trenton’s number of champions with three.
Next up was Steinert with two winners. The first was Rowan Lacy-Cancel at 138 and then Ella Johnson (28-3) at 165. Both pinned in their finals and Johnson is ranked third in the state.
Additional champs were Princeton’s top-seeding and defending champion Evelyn Xiao (20-3) at 107, Notre Dame’s Julie Toribio (20-3) at 144, Ewing’s Alexander Neuberger at 152 and Hightstown’s Gabi Sanon-Jules at 235. Toribio had a particularly memorable final when she edged Ewing’s Raymonda Kamara with a late takedown in a 14-12 war.
In addition to Woody’s three titles, Xiao, Neuberger, Johnson and Sanon-Jules have all now won the tournament twice.
While the girls tournament continues to expand and the wealth was somewhat spread around, the bottom line was more Trenton excellence as it placed in the top six of all 12 weights.
“This is our best team yet in terms of potential,” said Prunetti. “We have a quality freshman class and our returning girls made them feel welcome. They showed them what it means to wear the Tornado. We made it a point that our first goal was to three-peat and that’s just what they did. Our girls are tough.”
Nobody would argue with that last statement after watching Trenton do its thing for the third straight time in style.
