StormTracker8: Snow develops Saturday; very windy cold all weekend
Jan 30, 2026
Richmond, Va. (WRIC) -- We will have a few flurries across the region tonight otherwise cloudy skies will remain with us. It will be a cold night with lows in the middle teens.
Light snow will develop from south to north on Saturday and finally reach Metro Richmond between 10:00 a.m. and noon. Th
at snow will become steadier throughout the day, but it will have a hard time pushing farther north than Ashland due to the very dry arctic air in place.
As the storm develops off the coast of South Carolina and North Carolina it will create very strong winds across Central and Eastern Virginia. In fact, those winds could gust up to 40 mph Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning and long the coast those winds may gust up to 50 mph. That will give us wind chills during Saturday in the single digits but those wind chills will drop below zero possibly as cold as 10 below in some areas in Central Virginia overnight Saturday into early Sunday morning.
The snow will wrap up shortly after midnight Saturday into early Sunday morning and we are looking at about 1 to 2 inches for Metro Richmond with areas south of Petersburg picking up 2 to 4 inches. Some areas along the Virginia-North Carolina line could see as much as 4 to 8 inches of snow.
The strong winds will continue into Sunday even as the sunshine breaks out later in the day and we climb into the middle 20s, but those winds will make it feel more like the middle teens throughout the afternoon.
There is also a concern for tidal flooding along the Chesapeake Bay, the Northern Neck, the Middle Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula the strong winds will push the water against the land and into our Tidal rivers.
Monday will feature sunny skies, and it will be cold with highs near 35.
We will climb to near 40 on Tuesday under sunny skies.
As our attention turns to the middle of next week another week weather system will approach Central Virginia that could possibly bring us a wintry mix on Wednesday with highs in the middle 30s.
That wintry mix could continue overnight Wednesday into early Thursday. By Thursday afternoon the sunshine will return with highs remaining in the middle 30s.
Mostly cloudy skies will be across Central Virginia on Friday with highs in the middle to upper 30s.
