Large gathering protests ICE in Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A standing-room only crowd of more than a hundred people filled the New Liberty Missionary Baptist Church to join a demonstration against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), joining communities across the country pr
otesting the Trump administration’s law enforcement agency
“No human being is illegal,” Pastor Darrell Brooks said to applause.
Speakers took the stage next to a memorial featuring Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were shot and killed in confrontations with federal agents in Minnesota. About 20 other names were part of the memorial, who organizers said were others killed in interactions with ICE.
“Authoritarianism is increasingly taking over our government,” said Gabrielle Alford, president of Marion County Young Democrats. “We have law enforcement killing people.”
Alford organized the event as a vigil for the people “killed, kidnapped, or disappeared by ICE.”
The lineup of speakers featured faith leaders and grassroots organizers, along with local Democratic politicians, including State Sen. Fady Qaddoura of Indianapolis, Congressman Andre Carson, and Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears.
“When people see their own government use law and order as an excuse to conduct street-style executions, it is a moment in history that calls upon every single one of us,” Qaddoura said.
Indiana Republicans have been enthusiastic to find ways to assist the Trump administration’s immigration strategy. The state has set aside more than $15 million for the Miami Correctional Facility to house up to 1,000 beds for ice detainees. State lawmakers are currently considering a bill to expand cooperation with federal authorities, which would also create severe penalties for noncompliance.
But Alford believes the current use of ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection has gone beyond immigration enforcement.
“They’re disregarding the constitutional rights of every person in this country,” Alford said.
The day of demonstrations included protests across the state, with more planned through the weekend.
