RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond Public Library will host a variety of events that honor and preserve the city's Black history throughout February in honor of Black History Month. According to Richmond Public Library, it will host events throughout February across its locations that explore Black h istory, culture and lived experience, with an emphasis on local history and community storytelling. The library system said programs include films, discussions, genealogy opportunities, family-friendly activities and educational experiences. Some highlighted events include the following: 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19: Black History in the Making: A Conversation with Dr. Daryl Dance — Main Library  Dr. Daryl Dance, creator of VCU’s Black History in the Making Award and Professor Emerita at the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University, reflects on her leadership in African American Studies and the evolving celebration of Black History Month.  1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21: Black History: A Living Legacy! — Broad Rock Branch  The 5th Annual Black History Month Social and Celebration featuring community presentations, food, and fellowship.  5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25: Black History Month Poetry Slam and Open Mic — Ginter Park Branch  An evening of poetry, music, and original work inspired by the legacy of Black artists and storytellers Registration is required In addition to public programs, Richmond Public Library said it preserves and shares local Black history through its Digital Special Collections, which include historic photographs, documents, and primary source materials.  The library said it invites community members to record personal and family histories through services such as the Memory Lab Recording Pod.
