Frustrated neighbors on near east side demand action on snow removal

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Snow. Snow. And more snow at this Walcott and Vermont Street on the city’s East side. ” We have alot of people basically getting stuck. Sliding,” said Damorion Walker.
The Department of Public Works said contractors have been plowing residential streets with a s
ingle pass down he middle of the roadway. They added that they will be inspecting work completed by the contractors.
But Nadia Ridley, who lives on Wilcott Street, said, “No one has come down here at all. It’s the cars doing it themselves reversing and going back and forth.” The street is white with compacted snow. Tire tracks create makeshift roadways.
Nadia said her street is unplowed every year, but she thought this year would be different. “Just think about the inner city, not just the main streets, but the neighborhoods too. Because our kids don’t live in the streets, but the neighborhoods. We have to get to school and get to work and take care of our families without having this mess to think about.”
Starting Thursday, Marion County’s travel status will be downgraded to advisory that means routine travel may be restricted.
Damorion Walker said, “Half the time we don’t drive because its better to walk. If we drive a car we might risk getting stuck or sliding. Worse case scenario an accident or something.”
Damorion said he called the city about the snow removal, but was told to wait for a few days. For now the neighbors are doing what they can.
“The city needs to do something. They need to help out. Same way we’re helping others. We’re paying taxes. They could at least help and come move the snow out for us,” said Walker.
DPW said contractors have completed their passes but they will continue to inspect the streets. On the X, they said, “If you believe your street was missed, please call the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622.”
