As the New York City area digs out from the weekend snowstorm, officials are turning their attention to the cold. Frigid temperatures, believed to have been tied to multiple deaths in the city, according to the mayor’s office, are set to stick around for the near future. Mayor Zohran Mamdani’ s office said at least eight people were found dead outside as temperatures plunged between Saturday and Monday morning. The circumstances and causes of the deaths were not immediately clear and remain under investigation, but nevertheless, Mamdani warned that the danger is far from over. “This is an all-hands-on-deck effort,” the mayor said. One of the those who died over the weekend was found at East 69th Street and First Avenue on the Upper East Side, while another was found at East 35th Street and Third Avenue. Others were found across the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens from Friday through Monday. The Mamdani administration believes the cold weather played at least a role in their deaths, and the mayor said some had previous interactions with city homeless shelters. “A number of those…who lost their lives had had interactions with our shelter system in the past. It is still too early to share a broader diagnosis or a cause of death,” Mamdani said Monday. Homeless outreach teams have been out taking 170 people into shelters under Code Blue protocols, which were upgraded to Enhanced Code Blue Monday night. That involves having more than 50 NYC hospitals, plus Department of Homeless Services drop-in centers and shelters, operating with a fully open-door policy to all. “Shelters have relaxed their intake policies, where typically you’d have to go through a set of paperwork. What we’re seeing for Cold Blue is that no one is turned away from these kinds of shelters,” said Mamdani. Elsewhere, two deaths on Long Island were described by police as storm-related as well, both of which were in Nassau County. In Massapequa, a man died of a heart attack while operating his snow blower, according to Nassau County police. In Floral Park, retired NYPD Officer Roger McGovern collapsed at his church while preparing to clear the snow for the congregation. In New Jersey, a man was found by police unresponsive, lying on his back with a shovel in his hand. The 67-year-old was believed to be shoveling snow on the sidewalk at Beach Road and Martin Road in Verona. He was taken to Mountainside Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Across the U.S., at least 21 deaths were reported in states dealing with severe cold, according to NBC News. A fresh influx of artic air is expected to sustain freezing temperatures in places already covered in snow and ice. And it’s possible another winter storm could hit the NYC area this weekend. Charlotte Kramon and Russ Bynum of The Associated Press contributed to this report. ...read more read less
