‘At each other's throats': Steve Kerr after deadly shooting in Minneapolis
Jan 25, 2026
Golden State Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr spoke about Saturday’s deadly shooting in Minneapolis that led to the postponement of the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Saturday, the NBA postponed the game between the Warriors and Timberwolves amid massive protests in Minneapolis. The game
was moved from 2:30 p.m. PT Saturday to 2:30 p.m. PT Sunday.
The decision came after a federal agent fatally shot intensive care unit nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretti, prompting multiple protests across the nation.
“An individual approached U.S. Border Patrol with a 9 mm gun and when they try to disarm him, he reacted violently an agent fired a defensive shot,” said Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security.
Pretti’s family released a statement rejecting Homeland Security’s account of what happened, saying in part: “Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.”
Kerr said the incident left Timberwolves players feeling “uneasy” according to player Joe Ingles and coach Chris Finch, ultimately leading to the decision of postponing the contest.
“I’ve been following everything, it’s very sad, this has always been a great stop in the NBA tour, I love the city of Minneapolis, people here are wonderful and it’s very sad what’s happening,” Kerr said. “I think the general feeling is one of sadness for Minneapolis, the city, they have been through a lot, and we empathize with the citizens here.”
Thousands in San Francisco and San Jose protested in solidarity Saturday, marching and holding signs speaking out against ICE.
Back in Minneapolis, Kerr said the team met to talk about what was going on while the protests were underway.
Kerr also called for people to “look for one another.”
“What’s so sad about all of this is that we are at each other’s throats right now, you know, you can’t just say ‘I’m right and the other person’s wrong’, not in this current climate of nonstop news flooding at us,” Kerr said.
