NJ Transit to suspend service Sunday amid mammoth winter storm
Jan 24, 2026
NJ Transit announced it will be suspending all of its service Sunday as a major winter storm is expected to wallop the metro area, officials said.
The transportation agency will temporarily suspend all bus, light rail and Access Link service starting at 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
Later on, in the aftern
oon, NJ Transit will suspend rail service at 2 p.m. — with the transit agency saying, “Rail customers will need to be on trains that get them to their final destination at or prior to 2:00 PM on Sunday.”
As for when regular service will be restored, NJ Transit said it will provide updates on Monday service during the day on Sunday “as we assess the impacts of the storm throughout the state.”
NJ Transit President Kris Kolluri ensured he wanted to get transit services back up as soon as possible following the storm, expecting bus service will be the first to be back up and running.
“We want to make sure that the residents of New Jersey are safe. Once we get through the storm, we will ramp back the service as quick as possible so people can get on with their lives,” Kolluri said at a press conference alongside New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill.
“While the snowstorm is ongoing, our crews are going to be out there maintaining the fleet, clearing the snow and, yes, even plow the rails just to make sure we get everything in order to resume service as soon as it is practical,” Kolluri said.
In addition, Gov. Sherrill announced a state of emergency across New Jersey in preparation for the storm, with travel restrictions on commercial vehicles.
Heavy snow is forecast to hit South Jersey starting around 7 a.m. Sunday and move north, the governor said according to NJ.com.
“Stay off the roads on Sunday,” Sherrill said. “Starting tonight, we are going to see dangerous conditions forming. It’s a good weekend to stay indoors.”
