The White House shared a digitally altered image of Nekima Levy Armstrong shortly after she was arrested for helping to orchestrate an anti-ICE protest at church in Minnesota.
Armstrong, a Minneapolis-based civil rights attorney, was taken into custody alongside Chauntyll Louisa Allen and William Ke
lly, over a demonstration that disrupted services at a church affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention in St. Paul. They gathered at the house of worship on Sunday in protest of David Easterwood, a pastor with an apparent connection to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“WE DO NOT TOLERATE ATTACKS ON PLACES OF WORSHIP,” the White House wrote in a post on X Thursday announcing Armstrong’s arrest. It also shared an image of Armstrong, who appears to be openly weeping, as she looks into the camera.
The post quickly received a Community Notes fact-check with a link, reading: “Digitally altered image. See original arrest photo here.”
In the same image posted earlier by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Armstrong appears calm and composed during her arrest. FBI Director Kash Patel also shared images of Armstrong and other arrested activists, none of whom appear to be crying. Patel said Armstrong will be charged under a federal law that bars physical obstruction of houses of worship.
When asked for comment on the matter, a White House spokesperson referred NBC News to a separate post from deputy communications director Kaelan Dorr.
“YET AGAIN to the people who feel the need to reflexively defend perpetrators of heinous crimes in our country I share with you this message: Enforcement of the law will continue. The memes will continue,” Dorr wrote. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Protests and demonstrations have unfolded on a nightly basis in Minnesota since ICE agent Jonathan Ross killed Renee Nicole Good on January 7. Ross was among thousands of federal officers deployed to the state amid President Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown.
