Man arrested after stabbing at Castleton Square Mall
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One person is in custody following a stabbing at Castleton Square Mall, police announced Thursday.
Lem Word, 26, is accused of stabbing a man with a folding knife inside the mall just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, the
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a release.
Several officers administered First Aid to the victim, while others began searching for the suspect.
Officers located the suspect’s vehicle within 30 minutes and initiated a traffic stop in the 3900 block of North Keystone Avenue, about 8 miles southwest of the mall.
The driver, later identified as Word, pulled over but immediately tried to run, according to IMPD. He was quickly caught and taken into custody.
IMPD says the victim was stabbed when he tried to stop Word, a repeat shoplifter. A police report obtained by News 8 shows that Word had three stolen handbags from Macy’s in his possession at the time of his arrest.
Word faces preliminary charges of battery, theft, resisting law enforcement, and cocaine possession. Online court records show he has prior convictions for theft, including one in Marion County.
Word remains in the Marion County Jail. Formal charges have not been filed, and a court date has not been announced.
