INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — We’re approaching a larger system this weekend that will try to bring winter weather impacts to Indiana, but not everything is set in stone yet.
Wednesday night: Partly cloudy, cold, and breezy with potentia
l for wind gusts of 30+ mph. Lows in the low 20s.
Thursday: Colder with a mix of sun and clouds. Highs in the low 30s.
Friday: Bitter air returns to end the workweek with high temperatures at midnight Thursday in the low to mid 20s. Heading into the rest of Friday, temperatures will hover in the single digits to low teens with subzero wind chills and breezy winds.
7-Day Forecast: All eyes continue to be fixated on a large system that is poised to bring major to possibly extreme impacts to portions of the eastern half of the United States. For Indiana, we’re still noticing a north trend with more model guidance. However, some models are not on the same plane with a more suppressed system and less snow. Winter storm watches are currently in place for southern Indiana.
Odds for accumulating snow on Wednesday were increasing, but we cannot pinpoint exact snow totals just yet. Sorry, but this is one of those systems that requires patience as there could still be abrupt changes on Thursday and Friday.
So, what seems closer to reality as of now? We think it is fair to say snow slides into the state sometime Saturday afternoon and carries into Sunday with some travel impacts in the mix. Areas south of I-70 have better odds at this time of seeing several inches of snow. Snow-to-liquid ratios may be quite high due to the very cold air in place, which would mean efficient snow accumulation and quicker development of impacts.
There is a worst-case scenario that is still on the table, and that is a widespread significant snowstorm that brings major impacts to central Indiana. We’re not quite there yet, but it is not off of the table.
Despite the outcome, it will be frigid from Friday and into early next week. Wind chill values could subzero for many hours at a time. If we do end up having a bigger snow event, the current forecasted temperatures and wind chills into Sunday and Monday will drop with an increased risk of subzero air temperatures.
