Colorado lacrosse star Eric Law, scoring machine for DU and Denver Outlaws, retires

“E Law” is hanging up his prolific stick.
Colorado lacrosse star Eric Law announced his retirement from the sport on Tuesday, ending a 13-year pro career that started at Arapahoe High School, took him to the University of Denver and then made him a pillar of championship teams for the Denver Out
laws.
“It’s bittersweet,” Law said. “It’s sad saying goodbye to something that’s been a part of your life for so long and has been your passion and something you’ve done and thought about every day. But then I’m also just grateful for the ride it’s been.
“… I feel like I’ve done everything I can to help the sport get along as far as I could help it. I’ve got a young family at home and I’m really excited to be able to spend weekends with them. Instead of being on the field, being in the stands and being a dad.”
Among all-time pro field lacrosse greats, Law ranks seventh in career total goals scored (297, for an average of 2.2 per game), 11th in career points (442, 3.3) and 15th in assists (144, 1.1). He’s also the most accurate shooter ever, as his 50.3% shooting percentage ranks first among pro field lacrosse players with at least 500 career shots.
Law led Arapahoe to the Class 5A championship in 2009, then started his college career at Division III Salisbury before transferring to DU after one season.
“A lot of the talk that I got from Division I coaches out of high school was that I was too small, I wasn’t smart enough and I wasn’t quick enough to play significant Division I minutes,” Law said.
Law quickly proved those coaches wrong.
With the Pioneers, he was a centerpiece of two Final Four teams, and once drafted by the Outlaws into Major League Lacrosse he became a force in the pro ranks.
He scored nine goals on his first nine shots in 2013, and would go onto become a five-time MLL all-star and the league’s offensive player of the year in 2017. He was a key member of three title teams, including the winning the MVP of the 2016 championship in which he scored the game-winning goal with 13 seconds left.
The Littleton native finished his career as a reserve for the reborn Outlaws in the Premier Lacrosse League over the past two seasons. Over the last decade, Law has been a broadcaster for DU games as well as the National Lacrosse League’s Colorado Mammoth. He is also the director of lacrosse development for Denver City Lax.
Law, 34, said coaching in the pros could also be in his future.
“I’m always going to be a part of lacrosse in one way or another,” Law said. “For now, I still plan to be doing the work with Denver City Lax. That’s where my heart is and that’s where my passion will always be, in making sure that this game gets passed on to everyone that can be exposed to it.”
