Robbinsville girls basketball uses transition game to roll past Florence

ROBBINSVILLE — The Robbinsville and Florence High varsity girls’ basketball teams have been working through some things this season.
Rather than float under the radar, both teams are doing the best they can to make something of the 2025-26 campaign.
After having lost three games in a row, head c
oach Justin Schmid’s Ravens went about improving their offense to get back on track Tuesday.
With more players back in the lineup from the outset than head coach Zach Rinaldi’s Flashes had, R’ville was able to roll to a 54-20 victory.
The rejuvenated offense came in part from improved defense as the home team started both halves with three straight steals. As a result, the Ravens flew to a 16-6 lead after one quarter, then held Florence’s patchwork starting lineup scoreless in the second stanza.
“Yes, it was hard for me as the point guard,” Flashes’ 5-foot-4 sophomore Ryann Smith said. “I was trying to figure out something, but most of our starting five wasn’t in. Only two of the five who started the game were regular starters.”
Smith did what she could, leading her squad with seven points, while her classmate, Jayla Long, added five points. However, even when more regulars made their way back into the lineup in the second half, it was hard for 4-6 Florence to find the rhythm it sought.
Meanwhile, with 5-8 senior guard Mahek Singh and 5-7 junior forward Bianca Godwin bringing the energy from the outset, the home team found what had been missing.
“In practice this week, we did a lot more shooting,” Godwin said.
“We spent at least 20 minutes on a shooting drill,” Singh said. “It helped me. Even some of my foul shots were going in.”
Singh, Godwin and 5-9 freshman forward Alexa Boss got 6-8 Robbinsville going as each scored eight points with six steals and four assists. Singh scored five of her points in the first quarter, while Godwin and Boss scored four apiece.
Then, in the second quarter, 5-7 junior forward Keira Pierini came off the bench to score nine of the Ravens’ 13 points to open a 29-6 halftime edge.
Pierini (who led all scorers with 14 points), Boss, Singh, Godwin and 5-8 sophomore guard/forward Madison Griffin kept the home team’s transition game churning in the third quarter as it outscored the Flashes, 17-8, to increase the lead to 46-14.
“When our defense is playing well, our offense has more confidence,” Godwin said.
“We were all playing in rhythm at both ends of the floor,” Singh said. “That gave our whole offense the confidence we needed.”
