UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla will lead an effort to stabilize and improve the University of Rwanda, a young institution in sub-Saharan Africa that has been struggling with financial and leadership problems. Khosla was appointed chairman of the school’s Board of Governors in early January , tying him more deeply to a university that aspires to be a leading center in science, engineering and technology. About 13 years ago, Khosla created a small satellite campus of Carnegie Mellon University in Rwanda when he was serving as CMU’s engineering dean. Separately, he is now helping the University of Rwanda, which has more than 30,000 students. It is the largest university in a country that suffers from widespread poverty. “I look forward to helping strengthen an institution that is preparing the next generation of leaders driving a knowledge-based economy,” Khosla, 68, said in a statement. It is not unusual for the chancellor or president of a large American research university to serve on the board of other schools.
