Victor Wembanyama named AllStar starter
Jan 19, 2026
The San Antonio Spurs have their first All-Star starter in nearly a decade. On Monday, Victor Wembanyama was named a 2026 Western Conference All-Star starter. It’s the big man’s second All-Star appearance, and his first time being named a starter.
He joins Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Ste
phen Curry, Luka Doncic, and Nikola Jokic as the West’s starters. The Eastern Conference starters are Jalen Brunson, Cade Cunningham, Jalen Brown, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Tyrese Maxey. As usual, those starters were selected by a fan vote (50% of the vote), current NBA players (25%), and a media panel (25%).
But those starters won’t face off against each other in a traditional 5-on-5 game. This year’s NBA All-Star Game will take on a new format, which features a round-robin tournament between two teams made up of eight U.S. players and one team made up of eight international players.
According to the NBA, “in the round-robin tournament, Team A will play Team B in Game 1. The winning team from Game 1 will take on Team C in Game 2, followed by the losing team of Game 1 meeting Team C in Game 3.”
Then, “after Game 3, the top two teams by record will advance to face each other in the championship game (Game 4). If all three teams have a 1-1 record after Game 3, the tiebreaker would be point differential in each team’s two round-robin games.“
Barring any injuries, the starters for the international team are already set. Gilgeous-Alexander, Doncic, Antetokounmpo, and Jokic will join Wembanyama in the starting five. That means there is room for three more international all-stars on the team.
Wembanyama is the first Spur to start in the All-Star Game since Kawhi Leonard in 2017. He joins George Gervin, Alvin Robertson, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Leonard as the only Spurs to start in the game.
Wembanyama is averaging 24.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2.6 blocks while shooting 51.6% from the field, 38.2% from three, and 83.5% from the free throw line, all while playing a career-low 28.8 minutes per game.
Wembanyama will play in the All-Star game on February 15th at 4 p.m. CT, broadcast on NBC and streamed on Peacock.
