LINCOLN–(KFOR Jan. 19)–Monday’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Rally with school students from Lincoln and across Nebraska features the theme of “The Audacity to Walk Together In Love”, inspired by Dr. King’s 1964 Nobel Peace prize acceptance speech. The advisor for the MLK Youth Rally, Peter Ferguson, told KFOR News students that listened to the acceptance speech inspired them to use that message for this year’s Rally theme.  The rally took place Monday inside the Centennial Room of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Student Union. “Audacity means being bold and being courageous.  So this was a natural tie-in and fit,” Ferguson said. Organized annually by a diverse group of K–12 youth scholars, the Rally continues its long-standing mission: “…the promotion of the life and dream of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and local civil rights leader Dr. Leola Bullock through positive youth action.” The Community Rally started at 9am Monday with live and lit, community-centered experience featuring music, storytelling, a photo booth, face painting by scholars from Omaha Westside High School, line dancing, activities, and free children’s books courtesy of Rally Collaborator/Supporter partner, Linked2Literacy.  A fully youth-led Call to Action Program was held at 10am.  Featured student speakers included Addison Olds, Rafa Ahmed, Harnoor Sidhu, Belinda Qiao, and Moigen Boyd, Jr.   Spoken word, adaptive pieces and interactive storytelling from Afadil and Nawal Ahmed, Alexa Sutton and Becklin Dyson’s From the Floor.  Reflection and reenactment, including “April 4, 1968” by Kendyll Jackson.   Special guest message from Jamersyn Hughes, Junior Mayor of Statesboro, Ga.  The annual Belmont Community Civil Rights Book Project also took place. Jan. 15 would have marked Dr. King’s 97th birthday. For more information about the Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Rally, click the link: mlkyouthrally.com.     ...read more read less
