IFD spends nearly 5 hours battling blaze on east side INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — No injuries were reported after Indianapolis firefighters spent nearly five hours battling a blaze at a vacant building in Irvington on Sunday. The fire marked the third time since Dec. 11 that a fire has broken out at an old tire shop at 5239 E. Washington St., the Indianapolis Fire Department says. Firefighters responded to the building at 7 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls about heavy fire and smoke coming from the building. It took more than four hours for IFD crews to bring the fire under control, with the blaze put out just before midnight. Neighbors told IFD that squatters were responsible for the fire, but the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
