The Cavaliers will be without Darius Garland for at least a week and maybe more while the All-Star guard recovers from a sprained big toe on his right foot. Garland was injured Jan. 14 in the Cavs’ 133-107 romp over the 76ers in Philadelphia. He did not play two nights later in a rematch in Philad elphia when the Cavs beat the Sixers, 117-115. “Darius Garland injured his right great toe on January 14 at Philadelphia,” the Cavs announced in a mid-afternoon news release on Jan. 18. “Further evaluation and imaging at Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine on Saturday, revealed a Grade 1 right great toe sprain. Garland will be re-evaluated in seven to 10 days. During that evaluation period, Garland will undergo a series of treatment and rehabilitation and his status will be updated as appropriate.” Fortunately for Garland and the Cavaliers, the injury does not appear to be as serious as when he suffered a sprained big toe on his left foot late in the 2024-25 season. He tried to play through the pain in the last three games of the Eastern Conference semifinal playoffs with the Indiana Pacers last May after being sidelined the first two games. Surgery was performed on the toe soon after the Cavs were eliminated. Recovery delayed his 2025-26 debut until the eighth game of the season. Coach Kenny Atkinson monitored the workload as Garland worked his way back into form. Garland played 16 straight games before he was injured playing the Sixers. He is averaging 18.8 points and 6.9 assists this season. Jaylon Tyson will likely take his place in the starting lineup. Garland will miss six games if he is sidelined 10 days. The Cavs host the Oklahoma City Thunder at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at Rocket Arena in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They play at Charlotte on Jan. 21, host Sacramento Jan. 23 and are in Orlando a night later. The Magic and Cavs meet at Rocket Arena on 26 and then host the Lakers on Jan. 28.
