The brave
Marga Camarinta, 15, Manchester Center
I am 4,
and a self-proclaimed
hero of bravery.
The plane whirs in my ears,
loud and incessant and monstrous,
but I sit as calmly as I can.
Solemn and stoic
is this sugar-stuffed knight.
In this dark, blue light,
in this hollow, titanium titan,
I am illuminated by wonder.
Questions…
questions about a foreign land,
one shrouded in mystery,
with unfamiliar faces.
Like a faraway fantasy,
but tangible to the tips of my small, sticky fingers.
The United States of America:
the land of the free,
and apparently,
the home of the brave.
Yet so unlike the home I am accustomed to,
and so far away from the ones I love.
But just as this hero feels herself falter
and fall into the mouth of the monster that is her fears,
she is swept up by a warm, wooly embrace,
rescued by her own hero of bravery:
her dazzling, fearless Mom.
