Jan 17, 2026
The Broncos are heading to the AFC Championship Game.
Wil Lutz kicked a 24-yard field goal with 4:44 left in overtime to give Denver a 33-30 win over the Buffalo Bills in a divisional playoff game Saturday at Empower Field at Mile High.
The Broncos next Sunday will play at home the winner of S
unday’s Houston at New England game. It will be their first AFC Championship Game appearance since they won the Super Bowl in the 2015 season.
Lutz’s field goal was made possible by a likely season-saving interception by Denver cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian. Buffalo’s Brandin Cooks looked to have caught a long pass from Josh Allen before McMillian stole it away with 7:46 left in overtime at the Denver 20.
The Bills had forced overtime when Matt Prater kicked a 50-yard field goal with 5 seconds left in regulation to tie the score 30-30.
Before that, Bo Nix had thrown a 29-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Mims Jr. with 55 seconds left in regulation to give the Broncos a 30-27 lead.
The Broncos quarterback had five fourth-quarter comebacks in the regular season, which was second in the NFL behind Chicago’s Caleb Williams. While Saturday’s win won’t go down as a Nix comeback, he was impressive down the stretch.
For the game, Nix completed 26 of 46 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Nix outdueled Allen, who completed 25 of 39 for 283 yards but threw two interceptions.
The Broncos looked to be in great shape when they took a 23-10 lead early in the second half on a 33-yard field goal by Wil Lutz. That followed a strip sack by Nik Bonitto on Allen, with Malcolm Roach recovering the fumble at the Buffalo 17.
But the Bills came right back to cut the deficit to 23-17 on a 10-yard touchdown pass by Allen to Keon Coleman with 6:49 left in the third quarter.
Nix and Allen then traded interceptions. The Bills then got a 14-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Dalton Kincaid with 13:24 left in the game for a 24-23 lead.
The Bills extended the lead to 27-23 on a 31-yard field goal by Matt Prater, a former Broncos star, with 4:11 left in the game.
A lost fumble by Bills running back James Cook early in the second quarter turned things around. The Bills were up 7-3 and had first-and-10 at the Denver 32 when Cook was hit hard by linebacker Alex Singleton and safety Talanoa Hufunga pounced on it at the Broncos 31 with 13:20 left in the half.
The Broncos then drove down the field for a surprise 7-yard touchdown pass from Nix to tackle Frank Crum to go up 10-7.
The Bills tied the score 10-10 on a 33-yard field goal by Prater with 2:13 left in the first half. But the Broncos then got 10 points in the final 22 seconds of the first half to take a 20-10 lead.
Nix threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey with 22 seconds left in the half for a 17-10 lead. Then after a lost fumble by Allen following a 12-yard run. Wil Lutz booted a 50-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.
Humphrey’s score provided redemption after he had dropped a possible 10-yard touchdown pass from Nix on the opening drive. The Broncos soon had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Lutz for a 3-0 lead.
The Bills then got a 4-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Mecole Hardman with 5 seconds left in the first quarter for a 7-3 lead.
