The Big ‘Chill’: Mentor’s signature winter festival attracts a crowd
Jan 17, 2026
Now, this was more like it.
(That statement wholly depends on whether one is a winter-weather enthusiast or not.)
Last year, Mentor’s signature Chill Out event brought atypical, seasonal temperatures, inconsistent rainfall and a baby blanket of snow, if that.
This year, however, Mother Nature was
back to her traditionally unapologetic ways, kindly cooperating with frigid temps, whipping winds, and, for kicks, a frenetic mix of drops and flakes, prompting the annual bash’s attendees to embrace the true spirit of a day designed for “chasing away the winter blues.”

Naturally, the grounds of the Civic Center Complex teemed with revelers taking advantage of the “unique charm” of Northeast Ohio’s winter, with offerings ranging from intricate ice carvings and outdoor skating to the Chilly Chili Cook-Off and the ever-popular Beverage Tent slinging spirits from Geneva-based Seven Brothers Distillery Co.
And, yes, non-alcoholic, winter-themed sips, hot chocolates, ciders, and such, were also available for those who can’t/don’t/won’t hang.
“As the long winter days set in, this event provides a welcoming opportunity to get outdoors with family and friends and take part in a full day of engaging activities,” said Mentor Recreation Coordinator Kevin Cindric.
A city staple since 2019, minus one year due to that menace, COVID, the event continues to expand with new attractions, this year busting out Elegant Ice Creations’ popular Battle of Ice and Fire display, where a large ice block tower with wood encased in its center is ignited.

While Elegant Ice has been a part of Chill Out since the soiree began, owner Jeff Meyers knew the battle would captivate the crowd.
And even with a busy schedule — the company rocks about 45 regional locations from late November to early March — Meyers meticulously makes sure Mentor is included.
“I love this location,” he said. “It has an amazing amphitheater, and it’s great for doing live demonstrations.”
As usual, the fête was to conclude with its fireworks display, an eye-grabbing feature that officials know people get amped for….after all, winter’s better when there are cool things to do.
“The Chill Out continues to thrive by offering a diverse lineup of activities that appeal to all ages,” Cindric said. “Adults and children are equally drawn, and, together, these experiences make the event a cherished seasonal tradition.”
