Jan 16, 2026
A public memorial to celebrate the life of Bob Weir, one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, will be held Saturday in San Francisco.
Weir, a founding member of the Grateful Dead whose rhythm guitar work, songwriting and tireless touring helped push traditional American blues and folk mu
sic into the modern era, died earlier this month. He was 78.
A statement about his death posted on his official website said Weir had been diagnosed with cancer in July, beat it, but succumbed to “underlying lung issues.”
Saturday’s memorial will be held from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Plaza.
A procession traveling three blocks down Market Street, between 7th and 9th streets, is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
Anyone planning to attend the memorial should enter through Fulton Plaza. Public transportation or rideshare services is also recommended as parking in the area will be limited.
