EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — A man and woman in Evansville have already bonded out jail after their arrest on 106 total animal neglect charges.
Joshua,
32, and Alee Nelson, 27, were taken into custody by the Evansville Police Department on Tuesday. Online court records show they’re due in court for status hearings on Feb. 11.
When Evansville police and animal control responded to an animal complaint at a home on East Franklin Street Tuesday evening, they were met by Joshua and Alee Nelson, who said they needed help because had too many animals in the house.
On the first search of the house, officers found four dogs upstairs and 11 dogs in kennels in the home’s basement. Police noted that none of the animals had access to food or water.
Police, after hearing duck sounds from the backyard, located five ducks and four chickens.
The birds also did not have any feed laid out; police say “the only source of water was in a kiddie pool (that was) ark brown and had items such as dirt and leaves floating in the water.”
The Nelsons also informed police of cats that were being kept in two different rooms: 25 cats were found in a third room in the basement, while four cats remained upstairs.
Investigators say the conditions inside the cat rooms and the rest of the home prompted many of them to wear breathing masks.
“Animal control came out of the house in tears due to the strong ammonia smell,” court documents say, investigators later adding, “When I (the officer), I was short of breath and my eyes actively burned to the point it was hard to keep them open.”
Kiddie pools, buckets, and dog bowls were filled with urine and feces; officers and animal control reportedly had to walk through feces to get to the animals.
Officers also documented a number of cats sustaining injuries that “had not been treated properly and were not healing as they should have been.” One cat had an injured leg that had been “haphazardly” wrapped with human medical gauze.
Several of the cats also suffered from breathing problems due to the toxic air.
In total, officers recovered 43 animals from the home.
The conditions of the recovered pets were not clear as of Friday; News 8 has reached out to Evansville Animal Care and Control for more information, but have not received a response.
Joshua and Alee Nelson were arrested and being held on a $1,000 bond each. Court records show they bonded out on Wednesday.
