BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — Friendly bets over sports games aren’t uncommon, but in the case of two mayors betting on the outcome of Monday’s IU-Miami game, a fresh-baked pie is on the line. Ahead of the College Football Playoff National Championship between the Indiana Hoosiers and Miami H urricanes on Jan. 19, mayors Kerry Thomson of Bloomington and Eileen Higgins of Miami are engaging in a friendly wager to celebrate the occasion. This bet doesn’t include wearing opposing teams’ shirts for a day, or sending curated snack boxes, but the mayor of the losing team’s city will have to send the winning city a “signature pie.” Thomson said in a release on the wager that Bloomington has promised to send Miami Mayor Higgins an Indiana sugar cream pie. The wager involves the mayor of the losing team’s city sending a signature pie to the winning city. Bloomington has promised to send an Indiana sugar cream pie from Bloomington-based Two Sticks Bakery. Meanwhile, Miami will have to shell out a Florida key lime pie from Fookem’s Fabulous, which claims their pie is “definitively the best of the apocalypse.” Thomson says she’s excited for the game, emphasizing the importance of community. “This is about community, connection, and enjoying a shared moment,” she mused. “It’s fun to celebrate something happening on a national stage while keeping the focus on the people in our cities who are watching, talking, and enjoying it together.” Higgins agreed, saying she is eager to welcome Hoosiers to her city, and to “enjoy the famous Indiana sugar cream pie.” Both mayors reiterated that the wager is ceremonial and aimed at fostering community spirit, rather than promoting rivalry. The CFP National Championship Game is set to take place on Jan. 19. The ceremonial bets have been common in the past year of Indiana sports endeavors. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey also took part in a friendly wager last year when the Indiana Pacers were competing against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals. The wager, made with Oklahoma City Police Chief Ron Bacy, prompted the chief from the losing city to wear the winning team’s jersey at a national police convention. ...read more read less
