SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A celebration of live will be held this weekend for Claude, the beloved albino alligator that spent over a decade as a star attraction at the California Academy of Sciences. The alligator passed away abruptly last month at the age of 30 due to liver cancer. On Sunday, Jan. 1 8, the Academy will honor Claude with a celebration at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell. The free event will feature stories, speeches, performances and family-friendly activities "celebrating Claude's impact across the generation," said the Academy in a statement. Earlier this week, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission approved the renaming of a street in Golden Gate Park after Claude. Music Concourse Drive between John F. Kennedy Promenade and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will be renamed "Claude the Alligator Way," after the alligator, which first arrived at the Cal Academy of Sciences in 2008. ‘Claude the Alligator Way’: City renaming Golden Gate Park road to honor late reptile "Claude meant so much to the San Francisco community," said California Academy of Sciences executive director Scott Sampson in a statement. "We are also honored that the city has chosen to memorialize him with a ceremonial street naming in Golden Gate Park, a reminder of Claude's remarkable legacy connecting people with science, with nature, and with one another." Sunday's memorial event will take place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Following the outdoor program, the California Academy of Sciences will host special indoor programming until 5 p.m. The indoor event will feature craft activities and an artisan marketplace with commemorative Claude souvenirs for sale from local vendors.
