The Top 4 Misconceptions About Catholic Schools
Jan 16, 2026
As families start considering educational options for their children, private Catholic schools often end up surrounded by myths that can overshadow what actually happens inside our classrooms. Here are four of the most common misconceptions along with the truth behind them.
Misconception #1:
“Teachers at Catholic schools aren’t certified.”
The Truth: Every teacher at St. Joseph School-Fullerton is highly qualified, and the vast majority are certified through the Maryland State Department of Education. In fact, many of our teachers hold advanced degrees in education and related fields. Our faculty participates in ongoing professional development, ensuring that students benefit from current best practices in both instruction and classroom management. St. Joseph School-Fullerton has been recognized as a“Top Workplace” by The Baltimore Sun for the past 9 consecutive years. In addition, SJS-Fullerton was named “Best Private School: Co-Ed” (2024 2025) and “Best Place to Work” 2025 in the Baltimore Style Reader’s Choice Awards. These achievements reflect the unwavering dedication of our faculty.
Misconception #2: “Catholic schools aren’t as strong academically because they’re religious based.”
The Truth: Faith-based does not mean academically light. In fact, Catholic schools have a long-standing reputation for high academic expectations and strong standards. At SJS-Fullerton we have a 7-point grading scale in lieu of the 10-point grading scale. Students receive a well-rounded education combined with character formation, leadership, and service. Religion enriches the environment; it does not replace core content. We focus on educating the whole child, preparing them for high school, college, and beyond. St. Joseph School-Fullerton is proud to celebrate the success of the Class of 2025, whose academic achievements earned them a place among the region’s most respected high schools. With a 100% high school acceptance rate, over 80% of our graduates earned high school scholarships totaling $1.7 million. 57% were accepted into Honors Programs or Advanced Placement courses and close to 50% of our graduates scored in the top quarter nationally on the High School Placement Test (HSPT.) Furthermore, our median HSPT scores are 18 points higher than those of public and non-Catholic private schools. Our graduates continue their academic journey at some of the area’s most prestigious high schools and magnet programs including Archbishop Curley, Calvert Hall College High School, Eastern Technical High School, Gilman School, The John Carroll School, Loyola Blakefield, The Catholic High School of Baltimore, Mercy High School, and Notre Dame Preparatory School.
Misconception #3: “There’s always a waitlist and getting in is nearly impossible.”
The Truth: While some grade levels fill quickly, we welcome new families every year and often have space available. Our admissions process is straightforward and designed to ensure a good fit. We encourage families to reach out, ask questions, and tour the school. Be prepared to apply when the application portal opens on August 1st for the 2027–2028 school year, as the admissions process begins about a year in advance. Prospective students will need to complete a screening with us as part of the application process.
Misconception #4: “You have to be Catholic to attend.”
The Truth: Families of all faith backgrounds are welcome, and many students who attend are not Catholic. Our mission is to offer a warm, inclusive environment where faith, respect, and community are shared values. While active registered parishioners of our Parish, St. Joseph Fullerton, and other Catholic parishes within the Archdiocese of Baltimore are given priority during the admissions process; you do not have to be Catholic to attend school here.
