Oakland Animal Services (OAS) is sounding the alarm because it’s over capacity with dogs. On social media, OAS is urging people to come in and adopt dogs. According to OAS director Joe DeVries, OAS has received more than 90 dogs over the past 11 days, including a litter of 15 puppies. The shelt er’s maximum capacity for dogs is 65, and currently, they have 90 in their care, so resources are stretched thin. DeVries couldn’t say exactly why the shelter is seeing this surge in people surrendering animals, but he said there can be waves where the shelter sees a big influx like this. In particular, DeVries said OAS is in need of people to come in and adopt dogs, especially larger dogs. In an Instagram post, the shelter listed 17 dogs in particular need of adoption. “If we can’t get them adopted in the next several days, they could be euthanized, if we remain over capacity, and it’s just something we—it’s the last thing we want to do. And so we’re really calling out to folks to say, ’Hey, if you’re thinking about adopting, now’s the time,'” DeVries said. Anyone interested in adopting can stop by and visit Oakland Animal Services at 1101 29th Avenue. The hours for adoption on Thursday are 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the hours are from 12:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. You can also view the dogs that are up for adoption on the OAS website. Dogs that are high-priority for adoption have been flagged there as well. Adding to the strain, other Bay Area shelters are also over-capacity with dogs right now. San Jose Animal Care Center is over-capacity as well, and told NBC Bay Area they are seeing many people surrendering their animals.
