According to the Alameda Unified School District, Island High and the nearby Alameda Child Development Center have been evacuated. ACDC parents should pick up their students at Paden Elementary School, according to Alameda PD.
The nearby Academy of Alameda has also been notified to shelter in place over what officials say is an abundance of caution.
All students and staff are safe, according to district officials.
Officials are calling the gas leak an immediate threat to life and ordering people to leave the impacted area now. An evacuation center has been established at the Mastick Senior Center.
The school district said it is working with the Alameda Fire Department on the issue and has sent extra staff to support the schools. AFD says PGE crews have identified a 2-inch rupture in a gas line near 5th and Pacific.
They estimate repairs will take between three to five hours to complete.
"Due to the size of the rupture, gas may be noticeable in the air in the surrounding area," said Alameda PD.
KRON4 has a crew en route to the scene.
