ELKHART, Ind. (WISH) — Minor injuries were reported Wednesday afternoon when 30 vehicles were in a series of crashes on the Indiana Toll Road during heavy snowfall, state police said.
Investigators said a snow squall and limited visibility significantly contributed to the incident, which bl
ocked all eastbound lanes into Wednesday night.
Semitractor-trailers and passengers vehicles were among those in the crashes, said a news release issued Wednesday night from Sgt. Ted Bohner of the Indiana State Police. The first crash was reported just after 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, and it led to the additional collisions.
Injuries were reported. Emergency responders worked to take the injured people to a local hospital. One semi driver was trapped in wreckage for several hours before being freed and taken to the hospital. None of the reported injuries were believed to be life-threatening, the release said.
As of 7:49 p.m. Wednesday, eastbound traffic was being diverted at Exit 83 for Mishawaka and westbound lanes are being diverted at Exit 96 for Elkhart County Road 17 while crews continued to work to remove all the vehicles. Some vehicles were in the center median, and at least one had crossed into the westbound lanes, resting in a ditch on the north side of the interstate.
