Verizon outage: Users report phones stuck in ‘SOS’ mode
Jan 14, 2026
(NEXSTAR) – The country's largest cell phone provider appeared to be experiencing major issues Wednesday. Verizon subscribers complained online their phones were suddenly left without service and stuck in "SOS" mode.
DownDetector, a site that tracks outages, showed a spike in issues affecting Ve
rizon starting just before 9 a.m. Pacific Time.
Complaints started to pour in on X from several states, including Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Users reported their phones were unable to make calls and in "SOS" mode, meaning they couldn't connect to the network.
When a phone is in "SOS" mode, emergency calls to 911 should still work using other networks or a satellite connection.
The cell carrier's support team was responding to users, saying, "We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience."
The company did not give an estimated time for service to be fully restored. Two hours into the outage, Verizon said engineers were still working to fix service interruptions.
Nexstar reached out to Verizon for more information, but has not heard back.
What to do if your phone is in "SOS" mode
To get your phone back online you have an option: connect to Wi-Fi. If you enable Wi-Fi calling in your phone's settings, you should still be able to make calls even during the outage.
If you're not able to connect to Wi-Fi, you may be out of luck when it comes to phone calls as long as the outage persists. Many other apps, however, should still be working even without a connection.
Once the outage is fixed, you may need to force your phone to try reconnecting to the network. Apple advises turning on Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, then turning it off, to see if your device will reconnect.
