SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- Shannon O'Connor, also known as "Party Mom," is on trial for allegedly organizing secret and disturbing parties for Los Gatos High School freshmen. The mother wanted her son's group of friends to think of her as one of the "popular girls," teenaged witnesses testified. Th rough Snapchat group messages and party guest lists, O'Connor tightly controlled which students could be in the group of friends, and which students were cut out because they were deemed "untrustworthy," or not attractive enough, witnesses said. A girl identified as "Jane Doe 7" testified for several hours Tuesday about dating O'Connor's son when they were 14, underage teens binge drinking at O'Connor's house, and how the mom allegedly controlled the group. "There was no escape," Jane Doe 7 testified. During her 2020-2021 freshman school year, she broke up with O'Connor's son and tried to make new friends. After Jane Doe 7 texted another boy, the "Party Mom" found out and confronted her, saying, "We know what you did." "It was harder to escape from her than her son. She knew my every move. When I started to move on, I was shamed for it," Jane Doe 7 said. Many teens were socially restricted while schools were closed by the 2020 COVID pandemic. "I felt like I had nobody. I was lonely," Jane Doe 7 said. A Los Gatos parent who attended the trial Tuesday described O'Connor as a manipulative "monster." O'Connor, 50, has pleaded not guilty to child molestation, furnishing alcohol to minors, and endangering or injuring the health of a child. She is facing 63 felony and misdemeanor charges. Prosecutors' trial witness list identifies juvenile victims as 12 girls, "Jane Does," and eight boys, "John Does." O'Connor turned Santa Cruz beach house rental into 'Animal House' At some of the parties, O'Connor pressured boys and girls to engage in sexual activities when they were too intoxicated to give consent, prosecutors said. O'Connor was driven by an an "unnatural or abnormal sexual interest” in children, investigators wrote in court documents. Investigators said O'Connor was usually the only adult present at her parties, while her husband and other parents were kept in the dark. Teenagers were sworn to secrecy. Some parents became suspicious when their children returned home extremely intoxicated from O'Connor's Halloween backyard pool party. "My mom was very angry, she texted Shannon," Jane Doe 7 said. After parents and police officers questioned O'Connor about what happened on Halloween, O'Connor said she'd rather kill herself than go to jail, Jane Doe 7 testified. "I didn't want her to die," she said. Shannon O'Connor talks to her defense attorney in court on Nov. 6, 2023. (Pool image) Wild drives around Los Gatos Jane Doe 7 said there were several nights when O'Connor encouraged her to sneak out of her house without her parents' knowledge so they could "aimlessly" drive around town with other teens. O'Connor kept a duffle bag filled with alcohol between the backseats of her large black SUV, Jane Doe 7 testified. Teens drank inside the SUV while O'Connor drove, she said. During one late night drive, Jane Doe 7 said she was pressured into driving through Los Gatos High School's parking lot while two drunk boys were hanging off the back. One of the boys fell and hit the pavement. Jane Doe 7 testified, "I heard a noise outside the vehicle ... a thud." The boy was knocked unconscious and was bleeding from his head when O'Connor pulled him back inside the SUV. Instead of calling for an ambulance or going to a hospital, O'Connor drove to a 7-Eleven store to get ice. When police officers spotted the injured boy, O'Connor lied when they questioned her, the girl testified. "She pretended to be his mom, and said he got car sick," Jane Doe 7 testified. After officers left, O'Connor dropped the injured boy off at his house. On another night, teens were drinking alcohol inside O'Connor's SUV when she parked by a post office, the girl said. Two police patrol cars boxed the SUV in and officers walked toward the SUV. "I was feeling panic. There were empty cans everywhere," Jane Doe 7 testified. O'Connor allegedly told the girl to throw a duffle bag containing 30 full cans of beer, as well as the scattered empty cans, into the trunk. "She was horrifically calm in this scenario," the girl said. Officers questioned O'Connor, didn't spot the alcohol containers, and left, Jane Doe 7 said. The trial will continue Wednesday with further testimony and Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Peterson presiding. Jury deliberations are slated to begin in March. ...read more read less
