Park City puts on a classic Fourth of July celebration, drawing Parkites, people from elsewhere in Utah and out-of-state visitors each year to mark American independence. The holiday this summer could become an even larger bash in the community as the nation reaches 250 years. City Hall compiled some of the most detailed information to date about possibilities for the holiday in anticipation of a Park City Council meeting scheduled on Thursday. The City Council is slated to cast a vote on a resolution that would provide formal Park City support for a statewide effort related to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The resolution would also recognize a group called the Park City Utah250 Community Committee — comprising of City Hall staffers — that will be heavily involved in the planning for the holiday and will be the municipal government’s official committee for the effort. It appears there could be a combination of integrating themes of the 250th anniversary into events that are already planned, as well as the potential of organizing events linked to the broader celebration. Some of the possibilities outlined in materials drafted for the meeting include: Floats in the Independence Day parade with a theme of the 250th anniversary Public art Lectures A walking tour highlighting Park City’s history The Park City Library in June, meanwhile, is set to host a traveling exhibit. The exhibit “provides a high visibility opportunity to highlight Park City’s America250 efforts, promote related programming, and encourage community participation in statewide initiatives,” a City Hall report provided to the elected officials says. Independence Day is typically one of the busiest days of the year in Park City, with crowds lining the parade route and then remaining in the community for a day on Main Street, at the resort base areas or in the mountains. The holiday is capped with a drone show. The holiday is also the traditional start to the summer-tourism season in Park City. It seems there is a possibility the Fourth of July could be especially busy in Park City this year. The holiday is on a Saturday, meaning many will enjoy a three-day weekend. There could also be an added burst of patriotism with the Winter Olympics in the months before the holiday and with the World Cup soccer tournament — cohosted by the U.S. — overlapping with Independence Day. It had been expected that the municipal government would address the upcoming holiday sometime this winter since the arrangements would likely be more involved than in other years, with the possibility of a wide range of events. Bill Ciraco, a member of the City Council, in September broached the topic after a trip to the East Coast. The city councilor said during a meeting that he saw communities preparing for the 250th anniversary at that time and wondered how Park City could celebrate the day. The elected officials, in response to the comments, supported pursuing possibilities for the holiday. They did not discuss details at that time. The City Council meeting is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at the Marsac Building. It will also be broadcast on the municipal website, parkcity.org.
