A new twist was uncovered in the death investigation that started 15 years ago and has received worldwide attention since. The investigation into the death of 27-year-old school teacher Ellen Greenberg has been a long road for her family and the city of Philadelphia. And now, the U.S. Attorn ey’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania is interested in the Ellen Greenberg case, according to several sources. The federal government requested documents and information from the Philadelphia Police Department and other agencies last month, sources told NBC10. It is unclear how the federal government became involved and if and when it will release any details about its interest in Ellen Greenberg’s death. Greenberg was discovered by her fiancé in January of 2011 inside their 6th floor apartment in Philadelphia’s Manayunk neighborhood. The 27-year-old had 20 stab wounds. The medical examiner originally ruled her death a homicide but later switched it to suicide. It’s remained that way ever since. But, this newest development provides new hope for her parents who insist the justice system failed them. Ellen’s parents, along with their team of attorneys, have long insisted that the evidence shows the teacher was murdered. They have waged a years-long battle with Philadelphia and accused the city of labeling her death a suicide to allegedly cover up a botched homicide investigation. The family’s first real sign of progress came in January of 2025 when the original medical examiner on the case said in a written sworn statement that Ellen’s death should be designated as something other than suicide.
