A manhunt is underway for a potentially armed homicide suspect near Dotsero after a high-speed chase and shootout Tuesday morning, resulting in the closure of Interstate 70 in the area.The search has prompted the Colorado Depart
ment of Transportation to close both directions of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon. Westbound lanes are closed at mile marker 140 in Gypsum. Eastbound lanes are closed at mile marker 119.At 4 a.m. Tuesday, Vail Public Safety Communications received an alert to watch for a homicide suspect from the Denver area, believed to be near Gypsum. His name has not been released.The sheriff's office said the suspect was armed and possibly had hostages.An Eagle County deputy found a vehicle matching the suspect's description driving westbound on I-70 at a high rate of speed.The deputy followed, and when the driver exited and re-entered the highway eastbound, deputies attempted a traffic stop.When the suspect refused to stop, deputies deployed a spike strip.Two people exited the vehicle and pointed a gun at deputies, leading to an exchange of gunfire that hospitalized one suspect. No deputies were hurt.Law enforcement continues to search for the unidentified suspect who fled officers and remains at large. He is believed to be armed and dangerous. Do not approach; call 911 immediately if you see him. Do not pick up hitchhikers and stay away from the area. Report any sightings to law enforcement at once.Deputies with the Eagle County Sheriff's Office, Garfield County Sheriff's Office, Colorado State Patrol, and the Special Operations Unit are all searching for him.Local authorities have also requested assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.A shelter-in-place order was issued for the area as a safety precaution, according to the sheriffs office.
