BEREA, Ohio. (WOWO) — The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has approved a $246.8 million capital budget for 2026, funding major infrastructure and technology upgrades across the state’s primary toll road. Commission officials said the budget is designed to maintain and modernize the O hio Turnpike while improving safety, mobility and long-term reliability for motorists and commercial drivers. “This capital plan reflects our responsibility to the millions of travelers and commercial drivers who rely on the Ohio Turnpike every year,” Executive Director Ferzan Ahmed said. “It’s a forward-looking investment in safety, mobility and economic growth across Ohio.” Nearly 95% of the funding will come from toll revenue. The budget includes $213 million from the System Projects Fund, $17.9 million from the Renewal and Replacement Fund, $13 million from the Fuel Tax Fund and $2.9 million from the Service Plaza Capital Improvement Fund. The commission allocated $230.5 million for a preliminary list of capital projects, with an additional $16.3 million reserved for uncommitted needs that may arise during the year. Planned work includes the replacement and resurfacing of more than 114 lane miles of pavement, new bridge decks on 12 bridges, and the complete replacement of two bridges. The budget also supports the launch of an Intelligent Transportation System and Advanced Traffic Management System, a multi-year project expected to be completed in 2027. The system will feature dynamic message signs, variable speed limits, video monitoring and roadway weather sensors to provide real-time traffic and road condition information. Chief Engineer and Deputy Executive Director Chris Matta said the investments will help ensure the Turnpike remains safe and reliable while preparing for future transportation demands. “We’re committed to investing in the long-term safety, reliability and efficiency of the Ohio Turnpike for everyone who travels it,” Matta said.
