Two teens accused of riding atop a moving northbound Coaster train near Del Mar on Friday were cited for misdemeanor trespassing on railroad property by sheriff’s deputies, officials said.
The two 18-year-old men, one from Oceanside and one from El Cajon, were issued citations and released, said s
heriff’s Lt. Joshua Stone. Deputies found the pair in Solana Beach after being alerted by witnesses that individuals were riding on top of rail cars as the train was moving around 5 p.m.
Deputies immediately responded to the area but by the time they arrived, the two had climbed off the train and left the area.
A search of the area was conducted and individuals matching the description given by witnesses were arrested along South Coast Highway 101 and on South Cedros Avenue, Stone said. “Both individuals admitted to riding on top of the train,” Stone said.
A video of the incident posted on social media showed one man lying flat atop a rail car while the other was walking on top of it as the train went along a stretch of coastal track around sunset.
In a news release about the arrests, the sheriff’s office reminded the public that individuals who trespass or engage in dangerous behavior around railroad tracks and equipment “pose serious safety risks to themselves and others.”
