Fontana police on Sunday, Jan. 11, arrested a 31-year-old man after another man was shot to death at an apartment complex just after midnight.
Gilbert Giovani Alonzo was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of murder and was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
Officer Steve Reed, a Police Department spokesman, said officers responding to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex in the 16100 block of Merrill Avenue about 12:30 a.m. found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
The victim’s name has not been publicly announced.
Alonzo and the victim had argued in an unspecified disagreement in front of a nearby business before the shooting, Reed said.
Video from the freelance news organization OnScene.TV shows a bicycle on the pavement behind police crime scene tape at the Bay-Tower Townhouse apartments. It was unclear who the bicycle belonged to.
The investigation pointed detectives to Alonzo, who police said was seen leaving the scene on foot. A loaded gun believed to have been used in the shooting was found in the front yard of a nearby residence.
Detectives served search warrants that uncovered more evidence, police said. Alonzo was arrested about 9 a.m. after officers saw him entering a car, which they then pulled over.
No other suspects are being sought, Reed said.
Police ask anyone with information on the case to call 909-854-8083.
