January is National Mentoring Month
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — January is National Mentoring Month, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana is seeking mentors for over 1,000 children in the Indianapolis area.
Megan Iazeolla, the director of volunteer and community engagement for BBBSCI,
says mentorship is vital not only for the individual child but for the community.
“It’s a ripple effect. Those little moments bring more to the community as a whole. When we’re well, when our mental health is well, we know someone’s in our corner,” Iazeolla said Monday on Daybreak.
She says the program has a profound impact on the education and social and emotional health of many young mentees, known as “littles.”
“Littles will say, ‘I don’t know how to talk to people when I’m out. I’ve not ordered for myself.’ Things like that, that you’re showing them and modeling these simple things out in the community with other Littles and other Bigs. It becomes a part of their life in ways that they become comfortable and know themselves well.”
To participate as a mentor, prospective volunteers must be at least 19 years old and pass a background check.
“We don’t have an age limit, and we need people of all ages who want to give back and make an impact in their community,” Iazeolla said. “Anybody can do this. It takes little to be Big. It really does.”
