Firefighters do overhaul work after knocking down a house fire on Jan. 11, 2026 at a home off of 71st and Holdrege in northeast Lincoln. (Jeff Motz/KFOR News)LINCOLN–(KFOR Jan. 11)–A two-alarm fire late Sunday morning caused significant damage to a northeast Lincoln home. Lincoln Fire and Rescu e was called to a home on the northwest corner of 71st and Holdrege just before 11:30am.  The call came in from a neighbor, Jeremiah Gesch, who was outside working on his truck when he and his daughter saw smoke coming from the house up the street. “We went up there.  My daughter’s mom called 911 and we beat on the door,” Gesch told KFOR News near the scene.  “Finally, we opened the door and seen all the smoke.” After 911 was called, LFR’s Engine 9 crew arrived within three minutes and saw smoke and flames, immediately declaring it a working fire.  LFR Battalion Chief Jim Bopp told KFOR News it took about 15 minutes to get control of the fire. “Most of the body of fire was in the kitchen and got up into the attic space,” Bopp added.  “We found no one in the home.” One adult and three kids will be getting help from the Red Cross in relocation.  Fire investigators say the fire was cooking-related with it starting on the stove, burned through the walls and into the attic.  The fire went undetected after the occupants left the home. About $105,000 damage was done.   ...read more read less
