Residents of the neighborhood off South Skyline Road at Salem’s southwestern edge should boil water before drinking it, the city of Salem said late Saturday. The notice affects about 225 homes. A power outage in the area around 7 p.m. Saturday caused a temporary loss of water pressure when a safety device at the Davis Road Water Pump Station shut down pumps, a city notice said. That means potentially harmful bacteria could be present in the water. Bacteria can make people sick, especially those with weakened immune systems. See a city map of the affected houses here. The affected area is in the Bella Cresta area of the Sunnyslope neighborhood, east of South Skyline Road and south of South Davis Road. City workers put up barricades in the neighborhood informing people and are delivering information directly to affected homes Sunday morning, city officials said. Residents should bring water to a rolling boil for a full minute and allow it to cool before using it, the city said. People should store boiled water in a clean container with a cover. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, brushing teeth, cooking, washing fruits and vegetables, preparing baby formula, making ice and cleaning surfaces where food sits. City water staff are testing water for bacteria and will inform the public when water is safe to drink without boiling. City officials expect test results by early Monday, Jan. 12.
