Redlands library’s Southern California in Film series to feature ‘The Karate Kid’

The 2026 season of the A.K. Smiley Public Library’s Southern California in Film series will open Saturday, Jan. 17, with the 1984 film “The Karate Kid.”
The free screening is at 2 p.m. at the Contemporary Club, 173 S. Eureka St., Redlands.
“The Karate Kid,” rated PG, is a coming-of-age sto
ry about a teenage boy who learns to defend himself from bullies after moving across the country. Set in the San Fernando Valley, the movie was filmed in Reseda, Woodland Hills, Malibu and Norwalk’s Golf n’ Stuff Family Fun Center, according to a news release from the A.K. Smiley Public Library.
The commercial success of the film has been credited with the revitalization of the martial arts industry for generations of children after the film’s release, according to the news release.
