The home team is officially winless in the regular season series between Denver and Western Michigan. Each of the four games between the two teams that met in the Frozen Four last April in St. Louis was won by the visitors. After winning both games in Kalamzoo in November, the No. 7 Pioneers (12-9-2, 8-4-0 NCHC) were swept by the No. 6 Broncos (16-6-0,8-4-0 NCHC) this weekend at Magness Arena. Western Michigan won the first game 4-1 before taking Saturday’s finale by a score of 6-2. “It was a frustrating night on a lot of levels. I did like our start, liked our first period,” DU coach David Carle said. “An unfortunate non-call on the second goal (of Western Michigan), which resulted in a change of possession and a goal in the back of the net. I think that flustered us a little bit. Second period, I thought they carried the play, but we had a push the last five minutes (and) felt we weren’t going to be deterred or go away. “But a tough weekend overall. An opportunity to look in the mirror and learn and grow.” The Pios flipped the script from Friday night’s game, striking in the first minute through the stick of sophomore James Reeder. The Broncos scored five unanswered goals over the next period and a half before senior Rieger Lorenz got DU back on the board on the power play. WMU iced the game on an empty-net goal in the third period. The Broncos’ Hampton Slukynsky was the star of the weekend as the goaltender for the defending national champions stopped 70 shots across the two games and frustrated the Pios’ offensive attack. DU remains winless in 2026 after suffering one loss and a tie last weekend at home against Maine in the final nonconference series of the season. The Pios remain second in the NCHC standings, but lost ground to rival North Dakota ahead of the two teams’ first meeting next Friday (6 p.m. NCHC.tv) in Grand Forks. ...read more read less
