Angie Lawrence took a major step in upgrading her career during Labor Day weekend of 2025. That’s when she bought the coffee and doughnut shop in Madison Township where she had been a part-time employee. On Sept. 10, Lawrence reopened the business under its new name — The Cozy Crumb. During its first four months of operation, the shop has achieved success, she said. “I’m very happy,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better. The customers are simply amazing.” A box of sweet treats packed for a customer on Jan. 7 at The Cozy Crumb includes (front side of package): A cinnamon roll, strawberry jelly doughnut, and cookies and cream doughnut; (back row) cinnamon roll, salted caramel with white cream doughnut and peanut butter cream doughnut. Located at 6661 North Ridge Road in Madison Township, The Cozy Crumb specializes in doughnuts and coffee. But the shop also offers an array of products from small businesses in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties — items that include sourdough bread, fresh meat, honey and milk. The Cozy Crumb is the third coffee and doughnut shop in the past 4 1/2 years to operate at 6661 North Ridge Road, in a small plaza that borders Hubbard Road. Maggie’s Doughnuts Featured at Fat Cop Donut and Coffee Shop did business in the same storefront from June 2021 to mid-February of 2024. The Ox Shoppe Cafe then took over the space from March 2024 through August 2025. Lawence worked at the Ox Shoppe Cafe for owners Darrell and Dawn Fleming-Kendall from March of 2025 until they decided to close the store. At that point, Angie teamed up with her husband, Chris Lawrence, to buy the business. “So we worked out a deal with Darrell and here we are today,” she said. After becoming the new owners, Angie said she and Chris decided to perform an overhaul of the shop’s interior. “My husband did all of the work,” Angie said. Those renovations included painting the walls, putting in a new floor, taking out part of a wall and moving the counter to the other side of the store. Angie said The Cozy Crumb retained a lot of previous patrons from the Ox Shoppe Cafe. But the customer base continues to grow with first-time visitors who become regulars. “Every day there’s new people coming in,” she said. One loyal customer who stopped at the shop on the morning of Jan. 7 was Kayla Arehart of Painesville Township. Arehart said she tries to visit The Cozy Crumb at least once a week. “It’s a great atmosphere and the owners and coffee are fantastic,” she said. During her Jan. 7 visit, Arehart ordered a maple pecan pie latte — which contains espresso, steamed milk, maple syrup, vanilla syrup, butter pecan syrup and sprinkled cinnamon. Angie and her daughter, Brittany Weigel, who works at the business, agreed that lattes are the most popular drink at The Cozy Crumb. Lattes are made of espresso — a type of coffee — along with a significant amount of steamed milk and a thin layer of frothed milk on top. Other items on The Cozy Crumb’s drink menu include chai latte, cold brew, matcha, hot cocoa and dirty sodas. Angie said the drink menu is revised to feature interesting selections for different seasons and holidays. As for the shop’s sweet treats, Weigel said croissants are one of the top-selling items. When it comes to doughnuts, she said salted caramel and cookies and cream are varieties frequently requested by patrons. “But I think everybody seems to like them all,” Weigel said, regarding The Cozy Crumb’s lineup of doughnuts. Additional items in the shop’s bakery case include cinnamon rolls and eclairs. One way that Cozy Crumb tries to rise above being a typical coffee or doughnut shop is by selling additional food, home decor and personal care items made by small businesses in Northeast Ohio. Some of those products include: • Sourdough bread, which is delivered every Tuesday and Friday from Baked by Belle, a cottage bakery in Madison Township. • Milk from Old Country Creamery in Middlefield • Fresh meats, such as sausage, chicken, pork and ground beef, from animals raised at Darrell and Dawn Fleming-Kendall’s Broken Yoke Ranch in Thompson Township. • Yoked Beef Jerky, another item produced by the Kendalls. • Small-batch slow-cooker meal packets from Crock’n CLE. “You just add meat and a couple extra ingredients,” Angie said. • Handcrafted and natural soaps, lotions and cleansers, from the His Daughter Shop in Middlefield. • Handpoured candles from Melted Majesty, an online business based in Lake County. “Everybody likes all the products made in Northeast Ohio,” Angie said. “Stick with the small businesses and keep it local.” The Cozy Crumb is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 7 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday; and is closed Monday, according to hours listed Jan. 10, 2025, on the shop’s Facebook page.   ...read more read less
