SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Vice President JD Vance spoke today about the shooting in Minneapolis. He said Renee Good’s death was because of her own actions and that the ICE officer who shot her was acting in self-defense. Vance took several questions from reporters about Wednesday's ICE shooting. Im migration experts are questioning the legality of some of the vice president's claims about the federal agent involved. Vance showed his support for the ICE agent who shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good. “The reason this woman is dead is because she tried to ram somebody with her car, and that guy acted in self-defense. That is why she lost her life, and that is the tragedy,” Vance said. Two people shot by federal immigration agents in Portland, Oregon: Officials The Vice President showed his frustrations with the media, saying news reports falsely accused the federal officer of murder. According to Vance, the officer was in the Minneapolis neighborhood, going door to door, arresting illegal immigrants. “You have a federal law enforcement official engaging in federal law enforcement action; that’s a federal issue. That guy is protected by absolute immunity; he was doing his job,” Vance said. Legal experts are questioning that claim of immunity. Bay Area-based immigration attorney Gabriel Espinosa says that it’s inaccurate to grant immunity to a federal agent by claiming domestic terrorism. “There is an exception to the Federal Torts Claim Act, which would hold law enforcement for intentional torts, and the Supreme Court has upheld this decision as early as June 2025,” Espinosa said. Espinosa says in California there’s less chances of an ICE shooting because of protections from the local government. Vance says that the officer who fired the shots had been hit by a car once before, resulting in 30 stitches and injuries to his legs. “This is a guy who’s actually done a very, very important job for the United States of America," Vance said. "He’s been assaulted, he’s been attacked, and he’s been injured because of it. He deserves a debt of gratitude.” Espinosa expects the ACLU to get involved in this case and represent the family of Good. ...read more read less
