Police have arrested a 23-year-old man nearly a month after someone drove past a Redlands home decorated for Hanukkah, yelled an antisemitic slur and fired around 20 rounds from an airsoft handgun.
Garrett Bailey Stater was arrested Thursday, Jan. 8, at his Redlands apartment on suspicion of terrori
zing and making terroristic threats. Two other people were detained and released after questioning, police said.
Rodgir Cohen said his family had returned from dinner on Dec. 12, when he and his eldest son returned to the car to retrieve a phone left behind at the restaurant. A man and two women they didn’t know were arguing near the car, he said.
Cohen’s son told him the man was “holding something threatening in his hand” and yelled “free Palestine” and a slur at him. A few minutes later, Cohen’s other son texted that there was “something like firecrackers” that was upsetting the dog.
He turned around and watched security camera footage that showed a car with the man and two women firing out the window at the inflatable Hanukkah decor that filled the Cohen’s yard, which they refer to as “Hanukkah Town.”
Police didn’t find shell casings at the scene or see a flash bang on the security footage, leading them to determine the suspect used an airsoft gun.
After the situation, which police determined to be a hate crime, the department said it would provide more patrols in the area and around places of worship in Redlands. Congregation Emanu Eli in Redlands also said it would provide security at all in-person Shabbat evening services.
The crime happened the same weekend as a mass shooting near Sydney, Australia, killed 15 people celebrating the first night of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach.
Cohen said his family would avoid public events the rest of the year after the crime.
“A lot of people are coming to me, telling me that they’re sorry, that they feel this sense of hate and animosity rising,” he said. “It’s universal, I think; it’s all over Southern California.”
Stater is being held on $30,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 12 in San Bernardino Superior Court.
