INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — After 14 years of construction, Indianapolis residents have finally reached the end of the tunnel — the DigIndy Tunnel, that is. On Thursday, Citizens Energy Group announced that the 28-mile tunnel, located 250 feet beneath Indianapolis, is fully operational and meets al l federal and state regulations. The tunnel is designed to capture and divert sewer overflows — an estimated 5 billion gallons annually — away from local rivers and streams and into water treatment facilities. (Provided Diagram/EPA) Construction on the $2 billion DigIndy Tunnel System began in 2012 and wrapped up in October 2025. “This project began as a vision, became a challenge, and now stands as a testament to what our community can achieve together,” Jeffrey Harrison, president and CEO of Citizens Energy Group, said in a release. Completion of the DigIndy construction means “visible improvements” to water quality throughout Indianapolis, most notably in the city’s rivers and streams. In addition to the tunnel system, the DigIndy program has launched community projects such as the 10 Thousand Trees initiative and the Citizens Art Project, both of which will shape the city’s health and vitality for generations to come. With construction complete, the DigIndy program is in a period of post-construction monitoring, which will be followed by ongoing operation and maintenance.
